Now that you have seen the video, have you identified the path to gaming addiction?
- Games are addictive because they create a fantasy world which people like!
- People are in power and in control of everything once they are in a fantasy world
- Similar to "Positive Reinforcement" in the psychology context
- People are reinforced to do the same thing over and over again and ultimately became addicted to games!
Do things in moderation!
As you all know, gaming is not really beneficial if you abuse it. Like what the health promotion board states "Eat in Moderation", too much of one thing is bad for health. This theory applies practically everything in reality. Remember, the keyword is moderation!
Ways to cut down on excessive gaming
Work smart, play smart too! If you find yourself glued to your gaming platforms for too long you are then considered being addicted to gaming! Addictive gaming is harmful and detrimental not only mentally but socially too! You wouldn't want yourself to deviate from reality by spending too much time in a virtual world right?
- Gaming is not the only way to kill time! There are other alternatives such as doing sports rather than gaming!
- Spending your time more often outside rather than cooping yourself up at home helps a lot!
- Know when to stop! Set your own limits!
(Eg : 3 hours of continuous gaming is all you can do in 1 day!)
- There's always parenting control! You can ask your parents to control your gaming addiction!
(Like how the government-public system work on gamblers that are addicted to casinos!)
Just remember, the first step to control addictive gaming is to accept responsibility! That's because the problem lies with the individual, if you fail to accept that you are addicted to gaming, no amount of solutions can help you to control your hunger for gaming!
With this, I hope that you guys have an insight about the pros and cons of gaming and the ways to counter excessive gaming!

Totally agree, with the moderate playing of game, there will not be any problem such as gaming addiction. But is also your own responsibility to control yourself. otherwise, if you ask your parents to control you, you will end up quarreling and angry with them for stopping you ~~
ReplyDeleteAgreed - it all boils down to moderation.
ReplyDeleteYou have covered various aspects of gaming - it would be useful to link them more cohesively. I thought the polls and the questions are useful for kickstarting the discussion.
It's also useful that you shared your personal experience - any other specific examples and case studies you could share with us as well? You mentioned the case that's pretty well known about the Korean couple.
The article on Wii is interesting and provides a different perspective of gaming.
Hi Geoffrey!
ReplyDeleteLike everything, there's always a pro and con side to it. In this case, I think online games and Wii, Playstation etc are both harmful and beneficial. There should be a balance and not go beyond the line of addiction. I think it really boils down to self-discipline to know when you have crossed the line and gone into addiction.
Hello Geoffrey. I agree with your positive and negative comments about gaming. Especially about Wii being able to help one keep fit. I tried playing this tennis game on Wii using the controllers and it was really really exhausting after many many rounds. It was also very fun as the game not only helps in keeping one healthy, it also helps to bond players as it can be a 2 player game. As for the negative aspects, i agree that it all comes down to the individual.
ReplyDeletetoo many children are suffering gaming addiction since they can not control themselves well. Without parents guide, some children can play games all day long, it does not only effect their study but also their health.
ReplyDeleteyes, it all boils down to moderation. well and loads of self-discipline.
ReplyDeleteyes, wii supposedly helps to keep people fit, but this might just be an excuse made up by the gamers out there to game even more, right?
but i do agree that wii is fun and it works the muscles too, since my body ached after a day of wii. however, moderation still applies, since many people can end up playing too much with the excuse of exercising and end up neglecting their work.
In conclusion, measuring the pros and cons of gaming, we now know that excessive gaming brings harm to people whereas gaming in moderation does not as it would not affect your normal life.
ReplyDeleteIf one wants to play the game, one has got to take the responsibility to prevent him or herself from getting addicted to it and the consequences of playing the game. Eg. Wasting time instead of contributing the time to studying etc.
